Australian timber species

What is under your floor, and how it sands and finishes.

Russell works with all Australian hardwoods, plus imported timbers, parquetry, engineered timber floors and timber decks. These are the species most common under Newcastle and Hunter homes.

Blackbutt

The most widely used hardwood flooring species in NSW. It has a consistent, even colour in pale honey tones that brighten rooms and create an open feel.

Spotted gum

Rich brown tones with distinctive wavy grain — a favourite in coastal Newcastle homes and very hard-wearing.

Tallowwood

Yellow-brown with a naturally greasy feel that machines beautifully. Common in older Newcastle houses.

Ironbark

One of the hardest flooring timbers going — deep red-browns that take decades of traffic.

Brushbox

Even pink-brown tones and a fine, dense grain that polishes to a smooth, understated finish.

Jarrah

The classic deep red WA timber, found in many Federation-era homes across the region.

Tasmanian oak

Pale, straight-grained and takes stains particularly well — a good candidate if you want to change your floor's colour.

Not sure what's under your carpet? Russell can identify the species on inspection and tell you what it will look like sanded and finished.
